Our Top Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

At first glance, this work might appear closer to a challenging academic challenge than the latest popular music album from an artist whose last single featured an international pop icon. Split into four distinct sections and performed in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning symphonic work investigating feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, often via the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual posturing is almost a miracle, with complete praise belonging to the artist. Although this is not her first project to alchemize the past and modern styles, the scale feel much greater here, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist at her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's breaking hearts in two, the listener still want to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts to the wild track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener never quite understand—nor want to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely distinct point than how it began. A track explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. This feat gets repeated by another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes time to fully explore but never seem like a chore. Where other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
