Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
