Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
